SODA CANS- KEY TO TERMS AND SYMBOLS

WHAT IS A SODA CAN?

For the purpose of this listing, the following guide-lines will define a can as a SODA CAN.

        1. The label must be painted on the can.  Paper labels are generally excluded.
        2. Carbonated, non-carbonated, and juice cans are included.
        3. Canned wines and near beer cans are included.
        4. Non-filled soda related cans are included.

BRAND NUMBER

A "Brand Number" is composed of two parts and is assigned to each brand of soda can.

EXAMPLE:  C 940 is the brand number for Coca Cola where C is the first letter of the brand name, and 940 is the number assigned to the brand

GENERATION NUMBER

A generation is defined as an alteration of the label resulting in a noticeable change among cans of the same brand.

GENERATION NUMBER is three digits in length and follows the BRAND NUMBER.  Other characteristics of the GENERATION NUMBER signify  different TYPES of cans as follows:

The following changes in a can's label WILL result in a generation change:

1. TOPS- Only the major top changes, Cone top, Punch top, and Tab top, will cause a generation change.

2. CONTENTS- A change in wording (12 FL OZ vs 12 FLUID OUNCES) or its placement on the can (Side of the can vs bottom of the can) will create a new generation.

3. GRAPHICS- A major change in the wording or graphics on the label will cause a new generation number to be assigned.

4. ODD SIZE CANS- Most soda cans contain 12 ounces of drink, but there are exceptions such as the 8 ounce and 16 ounce cans which are marketed in some areas of the country.  The exceptions to  the 12 ounce size are defined as "ODD SIZE" cans.  An "O" in  front of the generation number signifies an ODD SIZE can.

EXAMPLE:  (C-940-O1) represents the Coca Cola 16 ounce Small Diamond Style can.

5. SET CANS- Occasionally a brand of soda will be distributed commemorating a sports team or special event where more than one can will be marketed as a set.  An "S" in front of the generation number defines a set can.

EXAMPLE:  (C-940-S1) is a 10 can set of St Louis Blues Hockey Team cans with pictures of players from the 1978 team on the back panel.

The following changes in a can's label WILL NOT result in a generation change.

1. TAB TOPS- Different tab tops such as Pull, Stay, etc., will not result in a generation change.

2. CANNERS- Canners of the same can design from different cities will not cause a generation change.

3. COLOR SHADES- Slight changes in color shades will not cause a new generation.

4. CAN DESIGN- Different types of cans such as straight steel, aluminum, triple neck, etc., will not result in a generation change.

REFERENCE NUMBERS

When the BRAND NUMBER and the GENERATION NUMBER are combined, the resulting number is called a "Reference Number" which when used with a  FLAVOR will accurately define one specific can.

DATE

The "DATE" shown will be the most accurately known time period when the can was sold or distributed.

VALUE

Like any antique collectable, can values are based on their relative rarity and fluctuate widely on a "Supply vs Demand" basis.  The can  values in this book are only suggested values and are certainly subject to change.  Always keep in mind that a can's value is determined by the buyer and not the seller.

DESCRIPTION

A word description of the cans label is used to more accurately define each generation of can.  Portions in quotes (") are shown as  written on the can label.

(9)= VALUE- Estimated value of can in "GRADE 1" Condition

Value of a can is very sensitive to the GRADE which defines  the physical condition of the can.  The grading system for cans ranges from MINT to GRADE 5, and is defined as follows:

GRADING SODA CANS

MINT This highest grade is reserved for those cans in new and perfect condition.  No scratches, small dents, or paint  imperfections.
(1+) Tiny scratches or handling marks that can be seen by close  inspection.  No rust, dents, or heavy scratches allowed.
(1 ) Typical average inside or off-the-shelf can with tiny dents near rim and small scratches not visible from a  couple of feet.
(1-) An older inside can that has age spots, ripples, rim wear, and small dents.  The can will still have a bright inside shine with no obvious rust spots on the painted surface,  top, or back seam.
(2+) A top condition "Dumper".  Some light rust allowable on top and seam, with very slight paint blisters on surface.  Colors should be true, but inside shine is gone.  The  display face should be close to a Grade 1 category.
(2 ) Light rust and blisters allowable with slight fading of true colors.  Can have tiny pin-holes if not noticeably  visible on the display face.
(2-) All of the can is readable, but the display face will have a noticeable defect.  Most of the original color is on the display face and the can does not present an overall rusty appearance.
(3+) Basically a sound can with one or more colors faded badly.  May contain rusted seam and top.  No large holes.
(3 ) Presents a solid display face, but may show some paint blisters.  Rust may be heavy on seam and top.  May have  noticeable holes in seam.
(3-) Faded but readable display face with heavy rust or sunburn on back side, seam, and top.  Pencil sided holes  allowable on back side and small holes allowable on the  display side.
(4+) Overall rust-aged appearance with rust nodules on seam and rims.  Major holes in back and seam with minor holes and  paint blistering on display face.  Part of display face  may be badly faded, but still legible.
(4 ) Has bad overall appearance on shelf with major defect in display side such as rust nodules, sever sun fading, or  holes.  Some of the wording may be unreadable.
(4-) One would not consider saving this can unless it is very rare or fills a gap in the collection.  The appearance  will probably cause its placement in a dimly lit, out-of-the-way corner of your display room.
(5 ) The lowest grade of can.  Brand name is barely readable.  Full of holes and heavy rust.  Of no value and seldom  saved.
