| Match Cover History The first book matches were invented in the late 1880's by a Philadelphia lawyer named Jonathan Pusey. He sold his patent to Diamond Match Company for a mere $4,000. Then in 1892, the Diamond Company printed the first advertising book cover called, "The Mendelson Cover". In a period of time just before Mr. Pusey sold his patent, the Binghampton Match Company printed "The Pisco Cover". Mr. Pusey found out about this, sued them for infringement of his patent, won, and forced them out of business. |
| Dealer Imprints This is a term use for match covers that are two advertisements in one. On one half of the cover a particular brand name will be feature and on the other half a certain type of personal advertising will be displayed such as a tavern, hotel, restaurant, or maybe even an upcoming event. |

| Ottawa Brewing Association Display |
| The Ottawa Brewing Association was located in Ottawa,
Illinois. It began operation in 1906 and finally closed its doors in 1920. The massive rock formation shown on the Shabbona Brew label is the famous "Starved Rock" located near Ottawa, Illinois along the Illinois River. It was once the site of a major Indian confrontation. During the struggle, an entire tribe of Indians was starved to death atop the rock. Ironically, Shabbona Brew was named after an Indian Chief who favored the white man. This non-violent chief is now buried locally. THANKS to Pay Fleming of Sheridan, Illinois for this unique story and the accompanying labels. |
