COCA-COLA SPIRAL STYLE (DYNAMIC CONTOUR)
The third major label change on Coca-Cola cans, the "Dynamic Contour" or the "Spiral Style" was introduced in 1970, and consisted of a white twisting ribbon over a red background. The ribbon design was developed to echo the shape of the early "Hobble Skirt" bottle.

Several generation changes have evolved since 1970 when the first Spiral can was marketed, offering a wide range of collectable cans from this style. A general description of these generation changes follows.

PANELS- The first generation cans had two main vertical panels and are called "Double Panel" cans. In 1971, the design changed to three vertical panels called "Triple Panel" cans.

CONTENTS & INGREDIENTS LINES- An understanding of Contents and Ingredients Lines opens up a whole new range of Coca-Cola can collectables, and provides a method of dating the spiral cans. Shown below are the various combinations of contents and ingredients.

PRICE STRIPES- Beginning in 1974, the "Price Stripe" made its debut in the market-place. The purpose of the Price Stripe is to speed up grocery check-outs by allowing a computerized reading device to scan the combination of lines and numbers on the label to determine the identity and price of the item.

The Price Stripe on Coca-Cola cans where different on cans of the same relative age will cause a generation change and produce another collectable can for the shelf.

A key shown below defines the structure of the price stripe. These codes may appear in the following descriptions.

PRICE STRIPE KEY: N= Numbers on the Price Stripe S= The Stripes of the Price Stripe

PRICE STRIPE COLORS: B- Black R= Red S= Silver

EXAMPLE: (N=R, S=S) The numbers are red and the stripes silver.

STAY TABS WITH INSTRUCTIONS- An interesting short run variation in cans occurred in 1976 with the development of the "Stay Tab". Unlike earlier "Pull Tabs" to open cans, the new opener did not pull off the can, but stayed attached. In its experimental stage it was felt that the public needed education as to how to use the new tab, and instructions were placed on the back panel of the cans.

COCA-COLA 8 OUNCE CAN V/M# 23
The Coca-Cola Bottler of Los Angeles first introduced the 8 ounce can in their market area in 1976. It was called the "California Compact". The small cans are still being sold in California and in the deep South, but haven't captured a very large share of the overall can market. They are an attractive and unusual addition to any collection.

When a 10 ounce Coca-Cola can turns up, the first thought is, "It's a Canadian can", most of which are 10 ounce cans, but you had best look closely. It may be a rare and unheard-of U.S. can from the Louisiana Coca Bottling CO, in Gretna, LA. This can is the only known domestic 10 ounce Coke can, and it will make a prize addition to any collection.

COCA-COLA 16 OUNCE CAN V/M#25
The first known 16 ounce can was the Small Diamond (Harlequin) style marketed by the Norcan Company of Portland, Oregon. 16 ounce cans generally have not been stable sellers and their use has been limited to short runs in different geographical areas. Several of the rare and exotic Coke cans are numbered among the 16's.

COCA-COLA 1/2 LITER "SNAP TOP" Resealable Can V/M#26
The "Snap Top" re-sealable can was a good idea whose time had not arrived. The idea was to be able to drink a portion of the 1/2 liter can and reseal against carbonation loss. The can worked in practice but did not survive short run market tests.
