COCA-COLA HOBBLESKIRT COMMEMORATIVE BOTTLES

Coca-Cola was first developed as a soda fountain drink, and no plans were made to place the drink in a bottle.  The Biedenharn Candy Co of  Vicksburg, MS was the first to bottle the drink.  Large scale bottling  was made possible on July 21, 1899, by contract between the Coca-Cola Company and Benjamin Thomas and Joseph Whitehead of Chattanooga, TN.

The Coca-Cola Company thought so little of the concept of bottling their drink that their initial contract gave rights to most of the  continental United States to Thomas and Whitehead.

The company finally recognized the future of the bottle, and in 1915 found the need for a distinctive package for their product.  The new bottle to be known as the "Hobbleskirt Bottle" was designed  by the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, IN.  The new design was  approved at the 1916 bottlers convention and became the standard for Coca-Cola in bottles.

1949 is the first recorded date in which the hobbleskirt bottle was used as a commemorative bottle.  Most of the hobbleskirt commemorative  bottles were short run bottles, some as few as a single case of twenty  four bottles.  For this reason, values placed on the bottles can be  very misleading.

Starting in 1986 in celebration of Coca-Cola's 100th ANNIVERSARY, a trend was established by the company to issue  a new light-weight version of the Hobbleskirt bottle in sets  commemorating special events.

Nine bottles representing different countries was issued during the centennial celebration in 1986.  They were packaged  in a durable wooden case with a 100th ANNIVERSARY plate  attached.  The value of bottles and case should exceed $100.00.  V/M# 771-

A 15 bottle set of painted label hobbleskirt bottles salute different countries was issued in 1990 just before Christmas.  Three different 6-pack cartons were also used in the promotion.  A value of $4.00 is assigned to these bottles.
